Changing Trends in the Employment Relationship
Date: 25/10/2011
At this meeting we were joined by the Chief Executive of the LRC, Mr Kieran Mulvey, who briefed us on the work being carried out at the LRC, including their recent reform programme. This event was attended by 30 members.
Kieran Mulvey’s frankness and openness was refreshing; and the opportunity to hear from a CEO who has been very proactive and sensible in his approach was appreciated. He gave a realistic overview of current employment relationships in the public service and the benefits of sharing experiences.
It was clear from the discussion that there is still a long way to go to secure meaningful engagement between Departments and member agencies on the subject of progressing reforms. There is a need for thoughtful forward planning by the Departments and by Government, and for an improvement in communication on the policies necessary to implement to secure recovery of the economy while simultaneously maintaining public services to a satisfactory standard.
If members are to progress the change agenda in their own organisations then they have to ‘stand on their own two feet’ and challenge the status quo.
